 Bob's Jewel Shop originated in Laurinburg, North Carolina in 1934. In 1983, Lawson McCabe purchased Shains Jewelers after the retirement of Arthur Shain and reopened in the spring of 1984. Shains Jewelers had been a part of historic downtown Lumberton for over 30 years. The Phelps family purchased the business from Lawson McCabe in the fall of 1984.
Greg Phelps worked for Bob's Jewel Shop in Laurinburg while attending high school and college. After graduation from college with a degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he took over as manager of the Lumberton store. Greg along with his parents, George and Betty Phelps purchased the store later that year. George came to Bob's Jewel Shop with a wealth of retail experience after managing several stores for Sears Roebuck and Company. Betty, who maintains the books for Bob's joined full time in 1998 after retiring from her first career with Pillowtex as Human Resource manager. |
 Bob's Jewel Shop opened a second location at Biggs Park Mall in 1989. To better serve Robeson County the Phelps family opened a third location in Pembroke, N.C. in 1991. In 1997 a free standing store location became available around the time George was thinking about semi-retirement. The best option seemed to consolidate the stores. In April 1998 we consolidated all three stores to 4280 Fayetteville Road in Lumberton. This proved to be a good move. The new location provides plenty of parking with easy access to Fayetteville Road and Farrington Drive.
With the consolidation, the Phelps family was able to offer a larger selection of fine jewelry in the new 2900 square foot location with over 40 showcases. Since that time Bob's Jewel Shop has had the opportunity to add several new designer lines to increase the selection even more. We were able to increase the size of our repair shop to give a quicker turnaround on repairs. A laser welder was added to the shop in 2005 enabling us to work on almost any piece of jewelry including costume.

 Bob's Jewel Shop is a proud member of some of the top organizations in the jewelry industry. We are long standing members of the Independant Jewelers Organization, American Gem Society, and Jewelers of America. Being a member of IJO since 1984 has enabled us to keep up with a changing industry by recieving biannual educational instruction as well as keeping abreast of current jewelry and fashion trends.
Bob's Jewel Shop has been a member of the very prestigous American Gem Society since 1988. The AGS is a trade association dedicated to proven ethics, knowledge, and consumer protection within the jewelry industry. All members are held to the highest ethical standards in the industry and are recertified annually to maintain their AGS titles. Jewelers of America is a national organization devoted strickly to protect, promote, update and upgrade the retail jewelry industry and to reinforce consumer confidence. Greg has been active on the state level by serving several terms on their board of directors. |
